What the election history shows

The general elections stayed red. The primaries tell more of the story.

Republicans won every District 161 general election from 2012 through 2024, including three uncontested races. Competitive same-party contests did not appear until 2022—and the 2026 Republican primary was decided by only 33 votes in the official county returns.

01

2012–2016: little primary competition

02

2018–2020: both parties appear

Both parties held District 161 primaries, but every nominee was unopposed within their party.

03

2022–2026: GOP primaries tighten

Roberts won contested primaries in 2022 and 2024; Ross then won the open 2026 nomination by 33 votes.
